five songs to listen to this week
This week, I revisit the discography of an ole favorite band of mine, Metronomy, while discovering the arrangements of a new one, Florist.
If you know me, you know I listen to a TON of music. Over 80,000 minutes last year according to Spotify to be clear…
I absolutely love discovering new music and diving into a plethora of genres. To me, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of hearing a song for the first time that gets your hips moving, grants you main character energy, or just lets you cry while taking a lap around the Echo Park lake (I have Reyna Tropical’s ‘Malegria’ to thank for that last feeling). Sharing music is definitely a huge love language for me, so here is my list of 5 songs this week that I had on rotation. Hope you enjoy!
Uneasy - Metronomy x spill tab (Posse EP Volume 1, 2021)
This was definitely my song obsession for the week. The restrained yet groovy bass with accompanying snare drum line this song in a swaying rhythm that makes it difficult to not start your day with a little pep to your step. Paired with spill tab’s wispy vocals, this track transforms into a satisfying weekend tune.
Cherub - Ball Park Music (Ball Park Music, 2020)
“Happiness weights a ton / it’s all speckled in luck and heavy as fuck / I could never pick it up.”
I love when storytelling through songwriting feels effortless. This song is a perfect example of setting the scene through song without feeling contrived or clunky. The song is about escapism and starting a new life after finding a phone number from a flyer.
false self - WILLOW (empathogen, 2024)
WILLOW is one nepo baby, I can get behind. I mean she’s infinitely talented, carries herself so gracefully in interviews, is so experimental with her sound, and already has 6 albums by the age of…*checks wikipedia* 23! ‘empathogen’ is her latest album, and false self was a track that stood out to me. The intro verses are slick and the song nails the feeling of self-evolution, letting go of our past selves, and coming to terms with your current self.
Bassically (Acoustic) - Tei Shi (2021)
This is a stripped down version of the Colombian & Canadian singer’s 2015 hit. The original was on the EP ‘Verde’ that debuted in 2015. Compared to her first version which was more synth / electronic forward, the acoustic version enters a more hallow and folky soundscape that showcases Tei Shi’s pleasant vocal abilities.
June 9th Nighttime - Florist (Florist, 2022)
I’m a Connecticut suburbs kid. So anything that has crickets playing in the background immediately transports me back to my small, snow globe of a town, North Haven. This track is immensely nostalgic and feels like it’s an audio recording of the real track playing through vinyl, especially towards the end when the instrumentals sway out of tune. This is the kind of song you play during blue hour as you stare at the ceiling and contemplate childhood memories.
surprised that there was nothing from radial optimism!
